Gregory opened Laru Ni Hati hair salon and barber shop 28 years ago with his partner Alan. “At the time I did not know anything about cutting hair except that I didn’t think I had any talent for it. I should have known that I might though. All four of my grandparents earned a living in this country with their hands. I graduated from the Aveda Institute as the first barber in the class of 1996. I realized that I didn’t feel comfortable with my skill set so I traveled to places like Vidal Sassoon in California and Miami, Bumble and Bumble in New York City, The Redken Exchange in New York City, American Crew in Denver, Wella / Sebastian in Los Angeles, and Jacques Dessange in Paris for hands on workshops to improve and expand my haircuts and hair color techniques. I try to share everything that I learn because it keeps me thinking about how and why we do what we do. My artwork has evolved over time as I change and experience life but some things stay constant. I try to make a connection with each customer. I want each person to leave happy. My goal is to make the most of what the client has and to keep the artwork fun and simple. Simple takes a lot less time to fuss with and looks good even if you do nothing to it.”

Yielding a more natural look than traditional foils, the balayage might be the most requested hair trend in salons. For a balayage, your colorist paints the color onto your hair, as opposed to traditional highlights, where your hair is separated, colored, and wrapped in foil. The hand-painted technique gives you a more natural look with a less obvious grow-out. Request a mix of highlights and lowlights for a sun-kissed glow.
The passé ombré paved the way for a more subdued style—the sombré.Instead, Papanikolas chooses the sombré technique for a softer way to achieve that summer grown-out look. Like the ombré, the sombré starts out dark at the roots and then transitions down the hair shaft to a lighter shade. However, the key to a polished sombré is incorporating more variation of color to avoid the ombré's unsightly line of delineation.
